Visa Debit is a new type of card for New Zealand.

You can buy things online, over the phone or even whilst travelling overseas, anywhere Visa is accepted. The money is taken from your bank or savings account. Just like your EFTPOS card you can also withdraw from an ATM. Visa debit cards have been abroad for many years but EFTPOS has had a monopoly in NZ for some time. These cards are much more flexible than EFTPOS though.

You can use the card in over than 24 million retailers overseas and in more than a million ATMs overseas.

You are often able to get this if you are over 15 as well unlike credit cards, very useful for younger people.

Most major banks now offer Visa Debit Cards (ANZ & National Bank don't currently offer a card!) :

The banks charge for using this card, whilst abroad eg Australia they can be available free!

ASB Visa Debit Card
$10 annual fee

BNZ Flexi Debit Card
$10 annual fee

Kiwibank Visa Debit Card
$10 annual fee

Westpac Debit Plus Card
$10 annual fee

ANZ & National Bank only have prepaid travel cards that aren't linked to their bank accounts.
